SIBU – The Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Dewan Mutiara Ilmu, SMK Bukit Assek continues to operate as of Monday, 12 January 2026, with six flood victims from one household currently sheltered.
The PPS was opened on Sunday, 11 January, at 2:30 PM, following heavy rainfall that affected several areas in Sibu. Since its activation, the centre has provided safe accommodation, food, and essential support to displaced residents.
At 10:23 AM on Monday, two officers from the Sibu Health Office arrived at the PPS to conduct checks on the quality of tap water, ensuring that evacuees and personnel have access to safe and clean supplies. Their inspection formed part of ongoing health monitoring measures at evacuation centres across the division.
Later in the morning, three RELA officers visited the facility to oversee security and provide additional support. Their presence reinforced the collaborative effort between agencies to maintain order and safeguard evacuees.
By 12:00 PM, no new victims had been registered at the centre, and the situation remained stable. Authorities confirmed that updates would continue to be issued regularly to keep the public informed.
The PPS at Bukit Assek is one of several centres activated in Sarawak during the current monsoon season. Statewide, thousands of residents have been displaced, with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reporting that more than 3,000 evacuees remain in temporary shelters.
In Sibu, the Dewan Mutiara Ilmu PPS has played a vital role in ensuring that affected families receive immediate assistance. The Civil Defence Force (APM Sibu) has been coordinating relief efforts, supported by agencies including JKM, RELA, and the Health Department.
Flooding across Sarawak has highlighted the importance of multi-agency cooperation in disaster response. Health checks, security patrols, and food distribution have been prioritised to maintain the welfare of evacuees.
APM Sibu reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies, reminding residents of its motto, “Nang Steady”, and encouraging the public to contact the agency in the event of a disaster.
The PPS at Bukit Assek remains under control, with authorities monitoring conditions closely and prepared to act should the situation change.
