Flood Survey Shows Stable Conditions in Salim-Stabau, Sibu

SIBU – A survey conducted in the Salim-Stabau area of Sibu District on Monday, 12 January 2026, confirmed that floodwaters have largely receded, with conditions reported as stable and under control.

The inspection, carried out at 1:14 PM under sunny weather, followed earlier heavy rainfall and high tide activity along the Rajang River. These factors had caused water to overflow into several low-lying riverside areas, prompting close monitoring by the Civil Defence Force (APM Sibu).

At Jati Jabatan Durin, no water was detected during the survey. Meanwhile, at Jalan Kong Khim, water levels were recorded at 0.25 metres outside residential properties. In contrast, Monica’s House at Jalan Kong Yit Kim showed no signs of flooding.

Authorities confirmed that the overall situation in Salim-Stabau is currently safe, though residents are urged to remain cautious. The public has been advised to prioritise safety and remain vigilant, particularly as weather conditions can change rapidly during the monsoon season.

Flooding in Sibu has been a recurring challenge, with several areas prone to overflow during periods of heavy rain and high tides. The Rajang River, one of Sarawak’s major waterways, often influences water levels in surrounding districts, making regular monitoring essential.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) continues to oversee flood response across the state, with thousands of evacuees still housed in PPS centres in divisions such as Serian, Bintulu, and Miri. In Sibu, PPS facilities remain on standby to accommodate residents should conditions worsen.

APM Sibu’s Public Relations and Documentation Unit emphasised that updates will be shared regularly to ensure transparency and public awareness. The agency reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies, reminding residents of its motto, “Nang Steady”, and encouraging immediate contact with APM in the event of a disaster.

The latest survey results provide reassurance that the Salim-Stabau area is not currently at risk, but authorities remain alert to potential changes in water levels.
