KUCHING – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning covering multiple states, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 1:00 am, Friday, 16 January 2026.
The advisory, released at 9:40 pm on 15 January 2026, highlights potential severe weather in the following areas:
- Sarawak (Miri Division): Beluru, Telang Usan, and Marudi
- Sabah: Interior (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort), West Coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud), and Kudat
- Perak: Hulu Perak
- Pahang: Lipis
- Federal Territory of Labuan
According to MetMalaysia, warnings are issued when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm per hour are imminent or expected to persist for more than one hour. Each warning is valid for a maximum of six hours per issuance.
The department emphasised that the combination of heavy rain and strong winds could lead to flash floods, falling trees, and hazardous driving conditions. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, avoid outdoor activities during the storm, and monitor official updates.
Local authorities have urged communities to take precautionary measures, particularly in flood-prone zones and coastal areas where strong winds may pose additional risks. Motorists are reminded to exercise caution on slippery roads and to be alert for sudden water accumulation.
This latest warning underscores the importance of preparedness during Malaysia’s monsoon season, when thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are common. MetMalaysia continues to monitor weather developments closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
