KUCHING, Jan 18 — The Women Empowerment Run 2026, organised by the Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association (PPSEAWA) Sarawak Chapter, successfully brought together more than 1,200 participants at the MBKS Foyer here this morning, marking a strong show of unity, health awareness and community spirit in the state capital.
The event attracted women, families and community allies from across Kuching and beyond, with more than 10 government agencies and non-governmental organisations fielding teams to take part. The strong turnout reflected growing public support for initiatives that place women’s well-being, inclusion and empowerment at the centre of community development.
Designed as a community fun run rather than a competitive race, the programme featured 3KM and 5KM routes that were accessible to participants of all ages and fitness levels. The focus was on participation, togetherness and confidence-building, allowing women, children and families to move side by side while strengthening social bonds across Sarawak’s diverse society.
The morning programme began with an energetic Aerodance warm-up session before the official flag-off. Along the route, runners were supported by hydration points, and at the finish line, a welcoming village atmosphere awaited participants, creating a relaxed and encouraging environment for all involved.
The event was officiated on behalf of the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, by the Deputy Director General of the Department of Women Development Malaysia, Dr Faridah binti Awang. Her presence reflected strong institutional backing for women-focused initiatives that promote health, safety and social cohesion. Also present was the Mayor of the City Council of Kuching South, Dato’ Wee Hong Seng, highlighting the local authority’s continued support for inclusive and community-driven programmes.
In the minister’s opening remarks delivered by Dr Faridah, the Women Empowerment Run was described as more than a sporting event. It was framed as a celebration of women, unity and shared responsibility, with a reminder that empowerment begins with access to health, knowledge, support systems and safe public spaces. She stressed that the inclusive routes symbolised the belief that empowerment is for everyone, regardless of age or background, and that community partnerships must continue beyond a single event.
PPSEAWA Sarawak Chapter Chairperson Dato’ Dr Hajah Munirah Hassan said the run served as a people-first platform that brought together agencies, organisations and individuals with a common purpose. She noted that the strong participation demonstrated a collective commitment to building healthier lives and better opportunities for women and girls. Also in attendance was PPSEAWA Malaysia Chairperson Puan Mona Jamaludin, reinforcing the association’s commitment at both state and national levels.
The event received support and participation from a wide range of organisations, including women’s groups, educational institutions, government bodies and private sector partners, further reflecting broad-based community involvement.
PPSEAWA Sarawak Chapter expressed its appreciation to all participants, volunteers and partners, and reaffirmed its commitment to continue empowering women and strengthening communities across Sarawak through meaningful and inclusive programmes.
