SELANGAU – The Selangau District Civil Defence Force (APM Selangau) has been carrying out monitoring activities in several flood-prone areas along the Batang Mukah River banks due to continuous heavy rainfall in the district.
The monitoring exercise, conducted on Sunday, targeted areas that had been identified as being at risk of flooding. Based on the results, the water level of the Batang Mukah River is stable, with a horizontal trend and no signs of spillage at the time of inspection.
The APM officers confirmed that there were no reports of floodwater overflowing into roads, bridges, and residential areas, including low-lying housing. The areas surveyed during the operation included Nanga Selangau, Kampung Melinau Baru, Kampung Kara, Kampung Engkabang, and Emperan Ubah.
The test was carried out as a precautionary measure following the recording of heavy rainfall in some areas of the Selangau District. The heavy rainfall has in the past raised concerns among residents living along the banks of rivers, prompting the authorities to be on high alert for any sudden changes in the river conditions.
Despite the current weather conditions, APM has reported that all residents, including those in the longhouses along the Batang Mukah River, have not been affected. There have been no evacuations, and all activities in the affected villages are normal.
According to the authorities, the situation in Selangau is still under control, and there is no immediate threat to public safety. Continuous monitoring will be done to ensure that any change in the water level is noted, especially in the event of any further rainfall.
Flood monitoring is an important aspect of disaster preparedness that is carried out by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, which is under the Prime Minister’s Department. The main objective of this activity is to offer early warnings and responses in order to save lives and property, especially in rural and riverine areas.
APM Sarawak added that proactive monitoring enables response teams to be mobilized quickly in case the situation turns for the worse. Residents are also advised to remain alert, especially those living along the banks of the rivers.
According to the Selangau APM Public Relations and Documentation Unit, the cooperation received from the local community has been positive, allowing the officers to conduct their inspections efficiently. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to the APM motto, “Ready, Fast, With Integrity,” as part of their efforts to protect the communities during adverse weather conditions.
APM Sarawak urged the public to remain updated through official sources and to report any indication of rising water levels or potential danger immediately, as monitoring activities will continue in the coming days.
