JPJ Miri Launches Special Ops to Strengthen Road Safety Compliance

MIRI – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ), through its Miri Operations Unit, has conducted the Special Ops Back To School and Ops Gempur Commercial Vehicles on 19 January 2026, focusing on comprehensive road safety enforcement throughout Miri district.

The operation featured patrols and inspections to ensure traffic law compliance, particularly among commercial vehicle operators. A total of 217 vehicles, both commercial and private, were checked during the operation.

Authorities reported various violations, including unlicensed driving, expired licences, failure to wear seat belts, and technical non-compliance involving vehicle safety standards. Additionally, two pickup trucks and decontrolled lorries were confiscated due to serious offences such as expired road tax and absence of insurance coverage.

JPJ Sarawak stated that the initiative represents its ongoing commitment to consistent and comprehensive enforcement. Officials highlighted that proactive actions like these are crucial for improving compliance and ensuring the safety of all road users.

The Back To School operation was strategically held in conjunction with the start of the new academic term to ensure that vehicles transporting students meet safety standards. Meanwhile, Ops Gempur concentrated on commercial vehicles, which are subject to stricter regulations due to their size, load capacity, and potential impact on road safety.

JPJ stressed that enforcement efforts go beyond punishment, serving as a platform to raise awareness among drivers and vehicle operators. Regular inspections are intended to foster discipline and encourage responsible driving behaviour.

Residents have expressed support for the initiative, recognising that strict enforcement enhances safety for families and businesses alike. JPJ reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and firm action against violators.

The Miri operation forms part of JPJ Sarawak’s wider strategy to promote a culture of road safety across the state. Officials reiterated that consistent enforcement, coupled with education, is essential to reducing accidents and maintaining orderly road conditions.
