KUCHING – A new recycling centre in Tabuan Melayu is set to drive innovative waste management and empower local communities economically, according to Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
Speaking at the Gotong-Royong Campaign at Kampung Tabuan Melayu and Tabuan Park 2026 on Sunday, Dr Hazland said the facility will not only provide essential recycling infrastructure but also feature a points-based reward system to encourage residents’ active participation.
“Residents can earn points through recycling and redeem them for food or basic necessities. This aligns with the Premier’s vision that even waste can generate income,” he explained.
The recycling centre is expected to serve a dual purpose: reducing solid waste to help combat climate change, while also creating economic opportunities at the community level.
Dr Hazland highlighted that each village’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) will play a key role in managing waste more effectively and systematically.
He added that the initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to sustainability and inclusiveness, ensuring that environmental responsibility brings tangible benefits to local communities.
In addition to launching the recycling centre, Dr Hazland also officiated the handover of financial aid for students from the Demak Laut constituency who have successfully enrolled in Institutions of Higher Education (IPT).
He described the support as both recognition and encouragement for young people to pursue academic excellence.
“We want more young people from Demak Laut to enter IPT. This assistance will ease the financial burden on families and inspire the next generation to view higher education as a key path to improving their standard of living,” he said.
By combining environmental and educational initiatives, the government demonstrates a holistic approach to community development, focusing on sustainability, economic resilience, and youth empowerment.
Observers noted that the recycling centre is a practical step toward building a green economy in Sarawak, while the education support programme underscores the importance of nurturing future leaders with both knowledge and values.
Together, these initiatives reflect Sarawak’s vision of inclusive progress, ensuring that environmental stewardship and educational advancement go hand in hand for the benefit of the people.
