SONG – A new senior citizens’ centre has been opened in Song, Sarawak Singai Rimbas Longhouse for Senior Citizens, and it is a move that brings redevelopment of facilities to the next level.
The Mayuh Kebiau Senior Citizens’ Centre was completed on 13 May 2024 for a cost of RM1. 92 million. The project was underwritten by the Ministry of Public Works and backed by the Kapit Parliament led by Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
During the launch, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta said the centre was intended to be a modern and inclusive venue for community activities. “The centre fulfills a comprehensive, contemporary and inclusive vision of community uses,” he said.
The project was implemented by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) with the assistance of JKR Kapit and the Kapit Electoral Council. Provided for elderly residents to use as a center for social interaction, cultural programs and community support.
Outside of the centre, the initiative is connected to broader socio-economic projects in the area. Land was contributed under the SCORE RECODA Programme and the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), putting the project in line with wider plans to develop rural areas. These programs are designed to facilitate growth that is sustainable and will benefit area residents.
Dato Sri Alexander also touched upon the related KMKK programmes, which support three new longhouses, upgrading of 43 existing longhouses and establishment of small bases to further enhance community resistance. These steps are likely to contribute to the quality of rural life and strengthen social linkages in rural communities.
It will aim to persuade senior citizens in Song to stay engaged in their communities and assist neighbours who contribute to care and local industry. Officials say the centre will help to alleviate isolation among seniors and offer them a structured place to be social.
The launching was graced by guests of honor including Political Secretary of Ministry of Works Ambrose Abong Bugek, The political secretary to Sarawak Premier Watson Awan Jalai, Resident for the Elderly at Kapit Elvis Didit and the Electoral Officer for Song Harry Bruce Edwin, together with Andy Lawrence the chairman from Kapitar Electoral Council (JPK), as well as the local leaders Senior Kempelebus Manie from Genturung Pendiau elders’ community.
The establishment of the Mayuh Kebiau Senior Citizens’ Centre is one example of Sarawak’s continuous effort to develop its community, especially in rural areas like Song. Upon its completion, the facility will serve as a hub for social and cultural interaction helping to keep seniors connected and active.
