Kota Samarahan Bridge Damage Inspected, Listed as Disaster Project

KOTA SAMARAHAN – On 27 January 2026, officials carried out a detailed inspection of the damaged Jalan Chin Ping Bridge as part of ongoing efforts to address safety concerns and prioritise infrastructure improvements in the area.

The inspection team included representatives from the N.17 Stakan Service Centre, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), Penghulu Chai, Deputy Chairman Kr Daily anak Joseph, MPKS staff, and local residents.

During the visit, the team assessed the bridge’s structural condition, which has deteriorated and disrupted daily travel for villagers and commuters. The presence of residents highlighted the bridge’s critical role in local connectivity and reinforced calls for prompt repairs to prevent accidents and service interruptions.

Authorities announced that the Jalan Chin Ping Bridge reconstruction has been added to the Samarahan Division’s Disaster Projects list. This classification underscores the urgency of the repairs to protect residents and maintain reliable transport links for surrounding communities.

Listing the project as a disaster initiative aligns with broader state and national priorities on infrastructure resilience. Across Malaysia, bridges and other structures damaged by neglect, environmental factors, or adverse weather are increasingly targeted for urgent intervention to safeguard public safety and support economic activity.

Officials emphasised that bridges are vital for connecting communities and enabling essential services. Nearby, major projects like the new Samarahan-Asajaya bridge are nearing completion, providing alternative routes and helping to ease long-standing traffic pressures.

Local authorities pledged to work closely with state engineers and contractors to develop a reconstruction plan for Jalan Chin Ping Bridge. This process will involve detailed engineering studies, cost assessments, and project timelines to ensure the new bridge meets safety standards and serves the community effectively. Similar projects in Sarawak have included rigorous oversight to prevent future damage and ensure durability.

Residents welcomed the announcement, noting that the damaged bridge had caused travel difficulties, particularly during the rainy season when structural weaknesses worsen. Upgrading infrastructure is seen as essential to improving daily life in the rapidly developing Kota Samarahan area, which continues to grow as a residential and commercial hub in Sarawak.

MPKS confirmed that the public will receive regular updates as planning and reconstruction progress. Residents are encouraged to report any infrastructure safety concerns through official channels to support ongoing monitoring and maintenance efforts.

The inclusion of the Jalan Chin Ping Bridge project in the Disaster Projects list marks a significant step in addressing long-standing infrastructure issues and demonstrates a commitment to providing safe and reliable travel for all Kota Samarahan residents.
