The programme, which was held at the Miri Maritime Zone Complex on Tuesday (Feb 4), is aimed at ensuring government premises comply with fire safety standards and includes training to enhance knowledge of preventive measures and actions during early evacuation in an event of emergencies.

Fundamental to the programme were in-depth discussions on building fire safety, focusing on risk management, right handling of safety equipment and taking immediate action in case of any event. These sessions where devoted to providing an extensive understanding of fire hazards and the practices required to manage risks in a workable way.

People also participated in building evacuation parades to teach practical training on performing evacuations safely and orderly. The drill aimed to acquaint employees with immediate measures which are necessary in real-time situations.

Furthermore, a briefing and on-the-spot fire-fighting drill was given that included instructions in the handling of the units and gas-bottle smothering. This provided an opportunity for students to develop good extinguishing practices, in line with the firefighters’ ability to respond to small fires before they spread.

The programme was the first of its kind in terms of conducting a holistic fire safety campaign at Miri Maritime Zone. The launch is part of the agency’s ongoing focus on fire safety compliance and creating a positive safety culture.

They said cooperation between MMEA and the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station had proved effective in enhancing civil defence readiness. The program is an effort to see that expertise and equipment can be made available for people who may be on the scene of possible fires.

The move is in pursuance of various measures aimed at improving the safety standards for government establishments and coincides with a larger national endeavour to protect lives and property.
