Padungan Chinese New Year Market 2026 Opens This Friday

KUCHING – The preparations for the Lunar New Year in Kuching will reach the highest peak when the Padungan Chinese New Year Market 2026 is officially launched this Friday, 6 February.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Councillor Cheng Chi-Kwok made the festive announcement to shopkeepers at Padungan Old Street earlier today.

There were also friendly exchanges and warm greetings with well-wishers amongst the merchants, and the custom to witness Councillor Cheng presenting symbolic auspicious mandarin oranges (sponsored by him) for good luck throughout the year!

For many living in Kuching the Padungan Chinese New Year market represented a highlight of the festive calendar, influencing thousands of people to sample the colourful setting for traditional goods and seasonal treats. This year’s market will be no different, with stalls selling decorations, seasonal food and drinks, clothes and cultural items that epitomise the Spring Festival.

Mayor Wee hoped that the market will inject a new lease of life and bring some vibrance to Padungan Old Street, in which it will be filled with the scent New Year’s tibits and festivity cheers. He noted that not only is the market a place for commerce, but it is also a cultural crossroads that connects residents and visitors.

Thousands of people, locals and foreigners alike will come to enjoy the festive environment in anticipation for China’s Lunar New Year which we celebrate with a public holiday. Padungan Old Street traders have decorated their shops to enliven the spirit of Christmas and the rich historical heritage of the street.

Community leaders said the market is an important driver of small business by providing a platform to feature their products and to add economic vitality to the city. The partnership between MBKS and local councillors reflects a common aim to preserve culture and tradition, as well community spirit of the times.

The opening is just days away, and the residents are eagerly anticipating it. This year’s Padungan Chinese New Year Market 2026 will be a lively, rousing celebration that heralds the dawn of the Spring Festival and new beginnings.
