In a recent development regarding the tragic helicopter collision in Lumut, the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) has released a preliminary report stating that both helicopters involved were deemed airworthy at the time of the incident.
According to the Navy’s initial findings, maintenance procedures for both helicopters adhered to the standards established by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The report highlighted that the AugustaWestland AW139 (HOM) helicopter possessed a black box, whereas the Eurocopter AS555 SN Fenek did not.
The investigation board is actively analyzing data retrieved from the multi-purpose flight data recorder, which was obtained on May 3rd. Navy officials confirmed that all aircrew members were in good health and qualified to operate the aircraft on the day of the incident.
The final report is anticipated to be concluded by May 29th, shedding more light on the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The collision occurred on April 23rd during a training exercise commemorating the 90th Naval Day celebration. The AW139, carrying seven crew members, and the Fenek, with three crew members, collided mid-air. The AW139 crashed onto the steps at the TLDM stadium, while the Fenek landed in the swimming pool at the sports complex.
As investigations progress, authorities are committed to uncovering the causes behind this unfortunate incident.
