Sarawak Premier Extends Warm Wishes for Chinese New Year 2026

Sarawak Premier Extends Warm Wishes for Chinese New Year 2026

KUCHING – The Premier of Sarawak, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has extended his heartfelt greetings to all Chinese in Sarawak as they celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse in 2026.

In his New Year message, the Premier emphasized the importance of spending quality time with family and friends, strengthening bonds of friendship, and fostering harmony and blessings across communities. “I hope everyone can enjoy this meaningful occasion in a spirit of love, unity, and prosperity,” he said.

The Premier highlighted that the Year of the Horse symbolizes strength, resilience, and endurance—qualities that are vital as Sarawak faces a rapidly changing global landscape, marked by economic uncertainties, technological disruptions, and climate challenges. Despite these hurdles, Sarawak has maintained strong economic performance through clear strategic policies and cooperation among all levels of society.

According to the 2026 Sarawak Budget, the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is projected to reach RM154 billion in 2025, reflecting growth of 5 to 6 percent. This marks a significant improvement from the 3.9 percent growth and RM148.2 billion GDP recorded in 2024. Key sectors such as oil and gas, resource-based manufacturing, and agriculture continue to drive the economy, while high-tech manufacturing and green industries are emerging as new growth engines.

Looking ahead, 2026 is expected to bring further progress through strategic initiatives, including the expansion of AirBorneo to regional destinations, the operation of the Sarawak-managed Port of Bintulu, and the implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) to empower Sarawak’s youth. Technological advancements are also underway, with plans to introduce the region’s first hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) in Kuching and strengthen the Sarawak-Sabah electricity grid, enhancing cross-border renewable energy collaboration.

The Premier also stressed Sarawak’s ambition to become a creator of technology rather than just a consumer. He cited successes in semiconductor development, including the production of GaN chips through collaborations with international partners such as CSA Catapult UK, and the state’s plans for micro-satellite development for weather monitoring and aerospace innovation.

Concluding his message, the Premier expressed appreciation for the unity and resilience of all Sarawakians, which he described as key to the state’s achievements in infrastructure, education, and economic development. He also noted that he would not make personal Chinese New Year visits this year due to the recent passing of his late wife, Datuk Amar Hajjah Juma’ani.

“Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kwai Le. May the Year of the Horse bring success, happiness, and prosperity to all,” he said.
