Sarawak Governor and His Wife Joined Richard Wee’s Chinese New Year Open House

KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Fauziah Mohd. Sanusi, attended a Chinese New Year open house hosted by Richard Wee, President of the Sarawak Chinese Association, and his wife, Dona Drury Wee. The gathering took place at Taman Liong Seng in Kuching on 17 February.

Arriving at 2.30 pm, the Governor and his wife were welcomed by the hosts and their family, along with a lively lion dance performance. The celebration reflected the easy cultural harmony Sarawak is known for, where festive occasions bring people of different backgrounds together.

Also present was Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts and Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, accompanied by his wife, Zuraini Abdul Jabbar. Their attendance signalled strong support for events that strengthen ties across communities.

Family members joined the celebration as well, including Sharifah Nong-Jasima and her husband, Muhammad Nur Hakeem Yusop, together with their daughter, Puteri Athena Maimunah. Their presence added a warm, personal touch to the afternoon.

Among the senior officials in attendance was Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Secretary to the Sarawak Government, who arrived with his wife, Baduyah Bujang. Ibrahim Baki, Deputy Minister of Utilities, was also there, along with department heads and dignitaries from various sectors.

Throughout the event, the governor and his family mingled with guests and exchanged festive greetings, adding to the relaxed and cheerful mood. The open house gave leaders and residents a chance to celebrate side by side, reinforcing Sarawak’s long-standing culture of mutual respect.

In his remarks, Wan Junaidi thanked Richard Wee and his family for their warm hospitality. He said gatherings like this strengthen friendship and goodwill among Sarawakians.

Beyond marking the Lunar New Year, the celebration reflected the state’s cultural richness. Events like these continue to show how unity and togetherness remain at the heart of Sarawak’s identity.
