KUCHING – In welcoming the holy month of Ramadan, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, held a congregational prayer at the surau of his official residence in Petra Jaya on Tuesday evening.
The event was attended by officers from Astana Sarawak, who gathered to await the official announcement of the start of fasting in Malaysia. Among those present were Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Hamzah bin Syed Paie, Senior Private Secretary to the Governor, Tuan Haji Junih bin Ahmad Salleh, Private Secretary, and several senior officers.
The ceremony began with a short tazkirah on Ramadan, delivered by Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Hamzah, followed by Ustaz Haji Syed Mohd Rusydi bin Haji Wan Yusup, Religious and Research Officer of Astana Sarawak. The evening prayers were then led by Ustaz Haji Ahmad Zambri Shah bin Mohamad Jeman, Chief of Ceremonies and Protocol.
Following the Isyak prayer, Tun Pehin Sri and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi joined the officers for dinner and fellowship. During the gathering, it was confirmed that fasting in Malaysia will begin on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
The ceremony reflected the values of unity and togetherness, reinforcing the importance of Islamic traditions in welcoming Ramadan. Tun Pehin Sri emphasised that the blessed month should serve as an opportunity for Muslims to strengthen their faith, enhance worship, and cultivate patience, repentance, and solidarity.
He expressed hope that Ramadan would bring blessings and prosperity to Sarawak and Malaysia, while also encouraging the formation of a more harmonious and morally upright society. His remarks highlighted the spiritual and communal significance of Ramadan, underscoring its role in fostering resilience and unity among the people.
The governor’s initiative to host prayers at his residence demonstrates his commitment to upholding religious values and encouraging collective worship. It also reflects his leadership style, which places importance on inclusivity and shared responsibility in nurturing Sarawak’s diverse community.
As the state prepares for Ramadan, the event at Petra Jaya set a tone of reverence and togetherness, reminding citizens of the deeper meaning of the holy month and its role in strengthening social bonds.
