SIBU – The Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Sibu Branch intensified enforcement efforts under Ops Tahun Baharu Cina (TBC) 2026, conducting patrols and monitoring activities throughout the town to safeguard road users during the festive season.
As part of the operation, JPJ officers inspected 179 vehicles of various categories. The checks uncovered multiple offences, including driving without a valid licence, expired motor vehicle licences (LKM), and registration numbers that failed to meet official specifications.
Technical violations involving vehicle conditions were also detected, highlighting the importance of proper maintenance and strict compliance with road safety standards.
Ops TBC is a nationwide initiative running from 9 to 22 February, aimed at reducing traffic offences that significantly contribute to road accidents.
The campaign targets nine major infractions, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, failing to wear seat belts, and misusing emergency lanes, offences that are consistently linked to higher accident risks, particularly during peak travel periods such as the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Similar enforcement operations have been carried out across Sarawak, including in Miri and Bintulu, where hundreds of vehicles were inspected and several were seized for offences such as expired licences and lack of insurance coverage.
JPJ Sarawak also extended monitoring to bus terminals to ensure public transport operators complied with safety regulations during the holiday rush.
JPJ Sibu reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening enforcement activities on a continuous basis. Motorists are urged to ensure their driving licences, vehicle road tax, and insurance coverage are valid before travelling. Drivers are also reminded to keep their vehicles in roadworthy condition to minimise unnecessary risks.
Authorities emphasised that the campaign is not solely punitive but also educational in nature, aiming to raise awareness among road users about responsible driving practices. By combining firm enforcement with public education, JPJ hopes to instil safer driving habits and reduce accident rates across Sarawak.
With festive travel at its peak, JPJ’s proactive stance serves as a timely reminder that compliance with traffic regulations is essential to protecting lives and maintaining order on the roads. Road safety, the department stressed, remains a shared responsibility among all users.
