Falling Tree Incident Reported in Kampung Merembeh, Bau

BAU – Emergency responders were deployed to Kampung Merembeh following reports of a falling tree incident on Friday afternoon, prompting swift action from local authorities.

According to the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) Bau District, its operations control centre received a distress call from a member of the public at approximately 1.00pm on 20 February. The report indicated that a tree had fallen in the village, raising immediate safety concerns for residents in the surrounding area.

Officials confirmed that the case was categorised as a public threat incident, commonly referred to as a PT case, involving a fallen tree. Such incidents are frequently linked to weather-related factors or weakened vegetation structures, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas like Kampung Merembeh.

Following the alert, response teams were mobilised to assess the situation and carry out necessary safety measures. While specific details regarding injuries or damage were not immediately disclosed, authorities emphasised that rapid response is crucial in minimising risks posed by fallen trees, which can obstruct roads, damage property, or endanger lives.

In Sarawak, falling tree incidents are not uncommon, especially during periods of heavy rain or strong winds. Emergency agencies, including APM, regularly remind the public to remain vigilant, particularly in areas surrounded by dense vegetation or ageing trees. Preventive measures, such as routine inspection and maintenance of trees near residential zones, are often encouraged to reduce potential hazards.

The Bau District Civil Defence Force reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies and highlighted the importance of public cooperation in reporting incidents promptly. Early notification enables authorities to act quickly, ensuring that hazards are contained before they escalate into more serious situations.

Residents are also advised to avoid approaching fallen trees, especially if they are entangled with power lines or blocking access routes. In such cases, coordination with other agencies, including utility providers and local councils, may be required to safely clear the obstruction.

Members of the public who encounter emergencies are urged to contact the Bau District APM office directly at 082-762925 or use the national emergency hotline at 999 for immediate assistance. Authorities stressed that timely reporting plays a key role in safeguarding communities and maintaining public safety across the district.
