LAWAS – A wild animal response team successfully captured a monitor lizard discovered inside a residential property in Kampung Punang on Friday, ensuring the safety of both residents and responders.
The incident was reported to the Lawas District Operations Control Centre after a member of the public alerted authorities to the presence of the reptile within a home.
The situation prompted a swift response from the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) Lawas unit, which deployed its specialised MyASPA-O 02 unit to handle the case.
Upon arriving at the scene, the team identified the lizard hiding beneath a storage cupboard inside the house. Such encounters are not uncommon in parts of Sarawak, where residential areas are often located close to natural habitats, increasing the likelihood of wildlife entering human settlements.
Trained personnel acted promptly using appropriate capture techniques, including controlled snaring and secure handling methods, to safely restrain the animal. The operation was carried out with care to prevent harm to both the responders and the lizard.
Authorities confirmed that the situation was resolved without any injuries. All four members involved in the operation completed their duties safely and later returned to the control centre.
Equipment used during the response was also reported to be in good working condition, reflecting the team’s preparedness and professionalism.
Wildlife intrusion cases, particularly involving reptiles, are periodically reported in rural districts such as Lawas. Environmental factors, including habitat disruption and weather changes, can contribute to animals seeking shelter in residential areas.
As a result, agencies like APM continue to play a key role in managing such situations while prioritising public safety.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid attempting to handle wild animals on their own. Instead, they are encouraged to notify the relevant authorities promptly to ensure proper and safe intervention.
