SARIKEI – Flood monitoring is back in focus in Sarikei. On Monday morning, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarikei branch carried out routine checks in several flood-prone areas after reports of rising river levels in the district.
Between 10.34am and 11.14am, officers inspected two locations often affected during heavy rain or sudden surges in river flow, Jalan Jelutong Barat and Jalan Bank.
At Jalan Jelutong Barat, the team conducted four checks. The river was at high tide and edging upward, but the situation remained under control. The weather was clear, and no immediate risk to residents was detected.
Jalan Bank showed a similar pattern. Four inspections recorded high and rising water levels, yet conditions stayed manageable. No incidents were reported in either area.
Flood surveillance has become routine in Sarikei, especially during the monsoon season when rivers across Sarawak tend to swell. The Department of Irrigation and Drainage has long identified low-lying districts as vulnerable to flash floods, often triggered by prolonged rainfall and tidal effects.
Local authorities described the latest operation as part of ongoing safety measures. APM Sarikei will continue regular patrols and monitoring, particularly as weather patterns shift and river levels fluctuate.
Residents are urged to stay alert and follow official updates. The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee has repeatedly stressed the need for preparedness, advising households in flood-prone zones to keep emergency supplies ready and to comply with evacuation orders when issued.
Located along the Rajang River, Sarikei has a history of flooding, especially in neighbourhoods near riverbanks and drainage systems. Past incidents have shown how quickly conditions can change.
For now, the situation remains stable. Authorities will keep watch, and public cooperation stays key if water levels continue to rise.
