Sarawak Governor Chairs Meeting on State Hero Service Medal

KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, has concluded a key meeting on the awarding of the State Hero Service Medal (Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara, PJPN). The session was held at his official residence in Kasuma Resort, Petra Jaya, on 25 February at 2.00 pm.

The meeting focused on preparations for honouring veterans who served during Sarawak’s most challenging security period. The PJPN award is intended to recognise the sacrifices of Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) veterans who dedicated at least one year of service in Sarawak during the communist insurgency era.

Among those present were Datuk Mohamad Zainal bin Haji Abdullah, Sarawak Police Commissioner; Major General Datuk Khairul Anwar Abdul Aziz, Commander of the 1st Malaysian Infantry Division; Tuan Jimbau anak Galu, President of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) Sarawak; as well as senior officers from security agencies and veterans’ organisations. Their participation underscored the collective effort to ensure the award ceremony is carried out with dignity and precision.

Discussions centred on the selection process and implementation details for the medal presentation, which is scheduled to take place later this year. The PJPN is regarded as a symbol of national gratitude, acknowledging the extraordinary commitment of those who risked their lives to defend Sarawak against communist threats.

Officials highlighted that the award represents more than ceremonial recognition. It is a reminder of the resilience and courage shown by veterans who safeguarded the state’s sovereignty and stability. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the peace and prosperity enjoyed today.

The governor emphasised the importance of ensuring that the award process is transparent and inclusive, reflecting the contributions of all eligible veterans. He noted that the PJPN is not only a tribute to past service but also a message to future generations about the value of unity and perseverance in protecting the nation.

Veterans’ associations have long advocated for greater recognition of their members’ sacrifices. The PJPN is seen as a significant step in addressing these calls, offering formal acknowledgement from both the government and the people of Sarawak.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to uphold the spirit of appreciation and respect for the country’s heroes. Preparations will continue in the coming months to ensure the ceremony reflects the honour and gratitude owed to those who served.
