JKR Sarawak Launches Solar-Powered Speed Radar in Bintangor

SARIKEI – The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) launched a solar-powered road speed radar signboard at Jalan Tg. Genting (Q576-1), Bintangor, on 25 February 2026. The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and raise driver awareness in accident-prone areas.

The launch ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris, Director of JKR Sarawak.

In his remarks, he emphasised the importance of adopting smart technology to strengthen Sarawak’s infrastructure safety system.

He noted that the integration of innovative tools such as solar-powered radars reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable and effective transport solutions.

The radar signboard is designed to display vehicle speeds in real time, providing immediate feedback to drivers.

Officials explained that this feature serves as both an educational tool and a preventive measure, encouraging motorists to comply with speed limits and reduce accident risks.

By harnessing solar energy, the radar system also supports Sarawak’s sustainability agenda, reducing reliance on conventional power sources while ensuring continuous operation.

The department highlighted that this technology is particularly useful in rural and semi-urban areas where road safety challenges are more pronounced.

JKR Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety infrastructure through innovation. The department aims to expand similar projects across the state, ensuring that communities benefit from enhanced monitoring systems and safer roads.

The launch in Bintangor is seen as a model for future initiatives, demonstrating how smart technology can be effectively deployed to protect lives and improve the driving environment.

JKR Sarawak continues to align its infrastructure development with the state’s broader aspirations for a safer, sustainable, and efficient transportation system.
