RM50,000 Allocated to Upgrade Surau As-Syakirin in Meradong

BINTANGOR – The Surau As-Syakirin at Scheme B Meradong is set to undergo significant improvements following the government’s allocation of RM50,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP). The initiative aims to provide worshippers with safer and more comfortable facilities, particularly during peak religious periods such as Ramadan.

Meradong State Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing highlighted that the project will involve electrical rewiring and structural upgrades to enhance the surau’s overall environment. He emphasised that the improvements will ensure worshippers can carry out their religious duties in a conducive and secure setting.

A brief handover ceremony was conducted by the Sarikei Public Works Department, with the project site officially transferred to the Deputy Chairman of Surau As-Syakirin. The event was witnessed by Datuk Ding, who reiterated the importance of maintaining community infrastructure for the benefit of all residents.

During his visit, Datuk Ding also engaged with local residents to better understand their concerns and challenges. He explained that such field visits are crucial in providing a clearer picture of the community’s needs, ensuring that development projects are aligned with real priorities.

The upgrading of Surau As-Syakirin reflects the government’s broader commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure, regardless of race or religion. By investing in facilities that serve as community hubs, authorities aim to foster inclusivity and improve quality of life in rural areas.

In addition to the surau project, Datuk Ding inspected another RTP initiative scheduled for 2026. This upcoming project involves new electrical wiring works at the TR Sadadu Longhouse in Sungai Meradong, with an estimated cost of RM58,500. The Sarikei Division Public Works Department will oversee its implementation.

The longhouse project is considered vital for ensuring the safety and comfort of its residents. Datuk Ding noted that proper electrical wiring is fundamental to community well-being, particularly in rural settlements where infrastructure challenges are more pronounced.

Community leaders have welcomed the government’s continued investment in local facilities, stressing that such projects not only improve safety but also strengthen social cohesion. The initiatives are expected to provide long-term benefits, supporting both religious practices and daily living standards.

With these developments, Meradong residents can look forward to improved facilities that reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift rural communities across Sarawak.
