KUCHING – North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) held its Neighbourhood Friendly Spicy Porridge Distribution Programme today at BGS River Bank, Sourabaya Ulu Village, in conjunction with the Ramadan Al-Mubarak celebration for 1447H/2026M.
The initiative was officiated by Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department and Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs, together with Dato Haji Hilmy bin Haji Othman, Mayor of Kuching North. Their presence highlighted the importance of community-driven programmes in strengthening social ties during the holy month.
The event was not limited to distributing food but also served as a platform to encourage neighbourly bonds and instil values of care and compassion among residents. Organisers emphasised that such programmes go beyond tradition, aiming to foster unity and inclusivity across the community.
A total of 1,100 packs of lambuk porridge, 750 packs of spicy porridge, and 500 pineapple seeds were distributed to attendees. The inclusion of pineapple alongside traditional porridge offerings added a refreshing element to the programme, reflecting the organisers’ effort to diversify the distribution.
Importantly, the programme also extended support to 20 asnaf groups, ensuring that vulnerable households received assistance during Ramadan. This gesture reinforced DBKU’s commitment to easing the burden of those in need while promoting a spirit of generosity.
Also present were Abang Bikusary bin Kadir, Chief Officer of the Mosque Management Department under the Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board, and Mr Mohamad Faisal bin Adenan, Acting Director of DBKU. Their involvement underscored the collaborative nature of the initiative, which brought together government representatives, local leaders, and community organisations.
Across Sarawak, similar porridge distribution events have become a hallmark of Ramadan, often organised by mosques, suraus, and local councils. These gatherings are widely recognised as opportunities to encourage volunteerism, strengthen friendships, and nurture goodwill among residents.
For DBKU, the programme reflects its broader mission of building a harmonious and prosperous city. By combining cultural traditions with social responsibility, the council continues to reinforce its role as a bridge between local government and the community.
As residents collected their porridge and pineapples, the atmosphere was marked by gratitude and camaraderie. The initiative once again demonstrated how collective effort can create meaningful impact, ensuring that Ramadan is celebrated with unity and compassion.
