SRI AMAN – The Sarawak-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration for 1447H/2026M took place at Bandar Sri Aman Mosque on Thursday evening, attended by state leaders and community representatives.
Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the Governor of Sarawak, arrived at 6.00pm with his wife, Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. They were joined by Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, who attended with his wife, Zuraini Abdul Jaabar.
The Governor and his delegation were welcomed by Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department; Misnu Taha, President of the Sarawak Islamic Council; Khalidi Ibrahim, Mufti of Sarawak; and Mahra Salleh, Resident of Sri Aman Division.
The ceremony also saw the arrival of the Premier of Sarawak, Abang Johari Openg, accompanied by his daughter, Dayang Nurjihan Abang Johari.
Among those present were Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, with his wife, Fatimah Mohd Iskandar, and Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, the State Secretary, with his wife, Baduyah Bujang. Senior officials, deputy ministers, and representatives from Islamic agencies also attended.
The programme began with a recitation on the significance of Nuzul Al-Quran delivered by Sarip Abdul, Director of the Islamic Centre at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
In his speech, Abang Johari Openg highlighted the importance of the Governor’s presence at the event. He said the attendance reflected the leadership’s commitment to Islamic values and unity among the people of Sarawak.
He added the governor’s presence strengthened the spirit of harmony across the state’s diverse communities. As the symbolic figurehead of Sarawak, the governor represents unity and stability while guiding the state toward continued progress.
The ceremony continued with Quranic recitations by Jubni Sulong, winner of the Sarawak-level Tilawah Al-Quran 2026. Guests later broke fast together before performing the Maghrib prayer, led by Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi, the Grand Imam of Sarawak.
The gathering also acknowledged the presence of Fauziah Mohd Sanusi and her daughter, Sharifah Nong-Jasima, before concluding with a dinner reception.
In his remarks, Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar thanked the organisers and he described the event as a meaningful occasion to commemorate the revelation of the Quran. He said such celebrations strengthen brotherhood and deepen appreciation of Islam among the people of Sarawak.
The annual Nuzul Al-Quran observance marks the revelation of the Quran and remains an important event in the Islamic calendar, with the ceremony in Sri Aman reflecting Sarawak’s continued commitment to religious tradition and social harmony.
