KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has officially launched the Sarawak Basic Needs Scheme (SKAS) 2026, a programme designed to ease the financial strain faced by residents amid rising living costs.
The initiative was unveiled by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, who emphasised that the scheme reflects the state’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its people.
Under SKAS, eligible recipients will receive digital vouchers through the S Pay Global application, enabling them to purchase essential goods such as rice, flour, and cooking oil at designated outlets. This digital approach is intended to streamline distribution and ensure transparency.
For 2026, the government has allocated RM640 million, marking a significant increase from last year’s RM480.2 million. The enhanced funding allows for higher assistance rates across all categories:
- Households: RM950 (up from RM800)
- Senior citizens: RM500 (up from RM400)
- Single individuals: RM300 (up from RM250)
The aid will be disbursed in three phases – March, May, and November – ensuring consistent support throughout the year.
According to official data, 857,814 Sarawakians are eligible for SKAS in 2026. This includes 395,802 households, 335,591 single individuals, and 126,421 senior citizens without spouses. The figures are based on Phase 1 recipients of the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) programme.
The Premier highlighted that SKAS, now in its second year, is part of Sarawak’s broader inclusive development agenda.
He noted that the scheme is particularly aimed at supporting the B40 and M40 income groups, who are most affected by inflation and rising food prices.
“This initiative is hoped to help ease the financial burden of the people, especially the B40 and M40 groups,” he said during the launch.
The government has also made eligibility checks accessible online. From 7 March 2026, residents can verify their status via the official portal at sarawak.gov.my/skas.
Observers view SKAS as a crucial step in strengthening Sarawak’s social safety net. By providing targeted assistance, the programme aims to ensure that no community is left behind in accessing basic necessities.
With the expanded allocation and improved digital delivery system, SKAS 2026 is expected to play a central role in sustaining household welfare and reinforcing Sarawak’s resilience against economic challenges.
