DALAT – Community and Tribal Leaders (KMKK) in Tellian have reaffirmed their role as vital intermediaries between the people and the government through an engagement session held at the Dalat Welfare Complex Meeting Room on Friday.
The session was chaired by Tellian State Assemblyman Royston Valentine, who emphasised the importance of KMKK in addressing local concerns and ensuring that community issues are channelled effectively to the relevant authorities.
The meeting brought together KMKK members under the Dalat District administration to deliberate on pressing matters affecting residents.
Among the topics discussed were applications for assistance under the Small Rural Project (MRP) allocation, the need for home repairs for vulnerable households, and longhouse maintenance.
Land-related matters were also raised, with participants highlighting the importance of collaboration with the Sarawak Land and Survey Department to ensure proper management and transparency in project contracts.
The session further examined the implementation of projects under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), which has been a key driver of infrastructure development in Sarawak.
Issues such as erosion embankments affecting residential areas were also addressed, underscoring the need for timely intervention to safeguard communities.
Royston Valentine stressed that the District Office plays a crucial role in supporting KMKK by coordinating responses to community challenges. He noted that closer cooperation between district officials and KMKK leaders would enhance efficiency and professionalism in service delivery.
Following the engagement session, a ceremony was held to recognise the contributions of KMKK leaders. Certificates of extension of appointment were presented to 16 recipients, while one individual received a new appointment as community head and tribal head.
The recognition highlighted the government’s appreciation for the leadership and dedication of KMKK in safeguarding the welfare of the people.
The event was attended by Dalat District Officer Matthew Hubert, Pemanca Peter Lai Sakul, and Tellian Service Centre Special Officer Jay Keram, alongside other community representatives. Their presence reinforced the collaborative spirit between government agencies and local leaders in addressing grassroots issues.
The engagement session reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to strengthening governance at the community level. By empowering KMKK leaders, the state aims to ensure that rural development initiatives are implemented effectively, while also fostering trust between the government and the people.
With ongoing challenges such as housing repairs, land management, and infrastructure needs, the role of KMKK remains central to bridging communication and ensuring that every concern is heard and acted upon.
The Tellian engagement session serves as a reminder of the importance of community leadership in shaping Sarawak’s development journey.
