KUCHING: The arrival of the first Batik Air flight from Guangzhou marked a significant step forward for Sarawak’s international air connectivity, strengthening ties between Malaysia and China while opening new opportunities for tourism and trade.
The inaugural flight touched down at Kuching International Airport on Tuesday with 145 passengers on board after a journey of approximately three hours and 45 minutes. The new direct route connects Guangzhou, one of China’s major economic centres, with Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak.
Sarawak Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, who was present to welcome the flight, described the service as a timely development that enhances accessibility to the state. He said direct city-to-city connections are crucial in supporting economic growth, tourism expansion and stronger bilateral relations.
He noted that the introduction of the Guangzhou–Kuching route would make travel more convenient for business travellers, investors and tourists from China who are keen to explore Sarawak’s progress in key sectors such as aerospace, green energy and the digital economy.
The direct connection reduces travel time and eliminates the need for transit stops, making Sarawak a more attractive destination for visitors. Industry observers believe the route could play an important role in boosting inbound tourism, particularly from southern China, a region with strong outbound travel demand.
The flight’s arrival also signals growing confidence among international airlines in Kuching as an emerging aviation hub in East Malaysia. With increasing global attention on Sarawak’s economic transformation, improved air links are seen as a strategic enabler for sustained growth.
Datuk Henry emphasised that more direct international services would bring substantial advantages to the state. Increased passenger traffic is expected to benefit local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport operators and retail outlets. In the long term, stronger air connectivity is likely to contribute to job creation and wider economic spillover effects.
The launch of the Batik Air Guangzhou–Kuching route reflects a broader effort to enhance Sarawak’s global connectivity. As international travel continues to recover and expand, the state is positioning itself to capture new opportunities by strengthening its aviation links with key regional markets.
With 145 passengers on its first journey, the new route begins on a positive note. Stakeholders are hopeful that consistent demand will encourage further expansion of services between Kuching and major cities in China.
