Fire Razes 10 Temporary Homes in Kampung Pasir Lutong Early Morning

MIRI: A devastating fire tore through Kampung Pasir, Simpang 4 Lutong, destroying 10 temporary settlement houses in the early hours of this morning.

The Lutong Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency alert at 4.06 am and quickly dispatched a team to the scene, according to station chief Henry Jugah. He reported that nine of the houses were occupied, while one remained empty. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

“The fire involved nine non-permanent houses, each measuring approximately 30 by 100 square feet,” said Henry, who was present at the scene. He added that the blaze was brought under control at 4.53 am, with operations concluding at 7.45 am after crews ensured no remaining ignition sources could spark another outbreak.

Henry noted that the operation faced several challenges due to the densely packed area, which hindered the movement of fire machinery. Additionally, water sources were limited and only accessible from the main road. Support teams from BBP Lopeng and BBP Miri Sentral were also involved in the firefighting efforts.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, forensics teams from the fire department have been deployed to determine the source and assess the total damages.

Among those affected, Albert Banjang, 47, shared his harrowing experience. “I was still sleeping when I woke up to a loud noise. When I came outside, the fire was already blazing,” he said. Albert added that his family could only salvage important documents as the fire spread too quickly to save more belongings.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of temporary settlements to fire hazards, raising concerns about safety measures and emergency preparedness in such areas. Authorities have urged residents in similar housing to remain vigilant and ensure fire prevention protocols are in place.
