LAWAS – The age-old tradition of Ziarah Raya continues to strengthen community bonds and reinforce unity across Sarawak during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, accompanied by his wife, visited the Islamic cemeteries at Pulau Sari and Pulau Salam on Tuesday to pay respects to his parents and close relatives.
He explained that the practice serves both as a tribute to the departed and a moment for reflection and prayer for their spiritual well-being.
Following the cemetery visit, Awang Tengah made a Hari Raya call to the residence of Awang Hamdan Awang Daud in Lawas.
The visit highlighted the close connection between local leaders and residents, with warm greetings and exchanges taking place in a relaxed setting.
The Deputy Premier stressed that Ziarah Raya is more than a festive custom. By visiting homes and cemeteries, leaders and community members reinforce intergenerational ties, show respect, and foster compassion, values that remain central to Sarawak’s multicultural society.
Lawas, situated in northern Sarawak, continues to showcase its cultural distinctiveness through traditions like this.
The practice demonstrates a strong sense of inclusivity, bringing together people of different backgrounds to celebrate and strengthen social bonds.
Local leaders note that continuing Ziarah Raya helps preserve heritage while promoting harmony. It serves as a reminder of the importance of family, respect for elders, and the collective spirit that defines Sarawak’s communities.
As Hari Raya celebrations unfold across the state, Ziarah Raya in Lawas stands as a living example of unity, respect, and cultural understanding that continues to bind communities together.
