KUCHING (May 26): A devastating fire broke out early this morning at a poultry farm located at Jalan Matang, resulting in the deaths of approximately 5,000 chickens. The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that the blaze destroyed one of the 11 chicken coops on the 20-acre farm.

Quick Response from Firefighters

According to a statement from Bomba, the alarm was raised at 7.11 am, prompting a swift response from firefighters based at the Petra Jaya and Batu Lintang fire stations. Upon arrival, the firefighters found a temporary structure at the poultry farm completely engulfed in flames.

Fire Contained but Not Without Injury

The firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 8.25 am, preventing further damage to the remaining coops and structures on the farm. However, the operation was not without incident. A firefighter sustained an injury near his left ankle due to an electric cable explosion. He was promptly transported to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. The loss of 5,000 chickens represents a significant blow to the farm’s operations and raises concerns about safety measures at poultry farms in the region.
