Sarawak Launches RM17.9m Rural School Redevelopment in Debak

DEBAK – A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the reconstruction of SK Datuk Bandar Debak, marking a significant step in Sarawak’s efforts to strengthen rural education.

The event took place on 30 March 2026 and was officiated by YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD).

The RM17.9 million project, funded under the Federal Government’s Poor School Programme, began in February 2026 and is scheduled for completion within two years.

The redevelopment will include new facilities such as an academic block, administration offices, preschool, surau, teachers’ quarters, and modern infrastructure designed to create a more conducive learning environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dato Sri Roland Sagah reaffirmed the state’s commitment to bridging the educational gap between urban and rural communities.

He emphasised that the project would provide safer, more comfortable facilities, supporting both teaching and learning while enhancing access to early education.

The initiative is expected to improve student welfare and contribute to the long-term goal of producing a competitive generation equipped with quality education.

Officials highlighted that the development reflects a joint effort between the State and Federal Governments to ensure equitable access to education across Sarawak.

Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, including YB Datuk Ricky @ Haji Mohamad Razi Sitam, Deputy Minister of Sarawak Community Wellbeing Development; YB Datuk Francis Harden Ak Hollis, Deputy Minister of Talent Development Sarawak; and YB Dato Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri, Member of Parliament for Betong (P204).

Also present were YBhg. Datu Hj. Adana Hj. Jed, MEITD Permanent Secretary; Ir. Ts. Bujang Kanang, representing the Sarawak Public Works Director; and Dr. Abg Adam Abg Deli, representing the Sarawak State Education Department.

The project underscores the importance of infrastructure in supporting educational excellence. By providing modern facilities, the government aims to create an environment where students can thrive academically and socially.

Education analysts note that rural schools often face challenges such as outdated facilities and limited resources.

This redevelopment is considered a crucial step in addressing these issues, ensuring that children in Debak and surrounding areas have access to the same quality of education as their urban counterparts.

The ceremony symbolises more than just the start of construction; it represents a broader vision of inclusivity and progress in Sarawak’s education sector.

With sustained investment and collaboration, the state hopes to nurture future generations who can contribute to its social and economic development.
