KUCHING – The Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, participated in a festive gathering to celebrate Aidilfitri on Tuesday.
The high-profile visit was hosted at the residence of Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts, located at Jalan Astana in Petra Jaya.
The visit, which took place on 31 March, highlights the ongoing tradition of “ziarah” or festive visiting, which remains a cornerstone of the social fabric in Sarawak.
Such events serve as a platform for the state’s top leadership to engage with cabinet members and their families in a less formal environment, fostering unity and mutual respect within the administration.
Accompanying the Governor and his wife were their daughters, Sharifah Fariah and Sharifah Nong-Jasima.
Also present in the official entourage was Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman bin Junaidi, the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, who served as the Minister-in-Attendance. He was accompanied by his wife, Datin Sri Hajah Siti Shorgayah binti Ahmad Zaidin.
The atmosphere at the residence of Dato Sri Abdul Karim and his spouse, Datin Sri Hajah Zuraini binti Abdul Jaabar, was described as warm and convivial.
Beyond the traditional exchange of festive greetings, the gathering allowed for informal discussions regarding contemporary issues affecting the state.
Guests were treated to a variety of traditional Hari Raya delicacies, a hallmark of Malaysian hospitality during the Syawal month.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to the hosts for their hospitality. He noted that these seasonal visits are vital for maintaining the strong bonds of brotherhood that define the Sarawakian leadership.
By engaging in these traditions, the state’s leaders aim to set an example of harmony for the broader community.
In Sarawak, the celebration of Aidilfitri often transcends religious boundaries, with “open houses” attracting people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
This particular visit underscores the importance of the relationship between the governor and the executive branch of the Sarawak government, ensuring a cohesive approach to governance and social stability.
As the festive season continues, such interactions are expected to persist across the region, reinforcing the unique social harmony that Sarawak is frequently praised for.
The Governor and Toh Puan extended their well-wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Aidilfitri to all Sarawakians, emphasising the need for continued cooperation and goodwill among the people.
