KUCHING – Representatives from the Sarawak Tourist Guides’ Association (SkTGA) conducted an educational visit to the TEGAS Digital Village (TDV) on Tuesday to gain a deeper understanding of the state’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Led by SkTGA Chairman Mr Edwin Lim, the delegation was introduced to the sophisticated innovation ecosystem currently driving digital entrepreneurship across the region.
The visit, held on 31 March 2026, served as a bridge between the tourism sector and the high-tech initiatives spearheaded by the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS).
By exploring the facility, the tourist guides were given a firsthand look at the various technological tools and support systems designed to nurture local start-ups and digital creators.
Throughout the session, participants were briefed on TEGAS’s core roles, including its specific initiatives for advancing the digital economy and its strategic direction for the coming years.
This exposure is part of a broader effort to ensure that those on the front lines of the tourism industry are well-versed in Sarawak’s modern identity, moving beyond traditional cultural narratives to include stories of modern innovation.
As the primary points of contact for international and domestic visitors, tour guides act as vital spokespersons for the state.
By equipping them with up-to-date knowledge regarding Sarawak’s digital transformation, the programme enables these professionals to present a more comprehensive and confident image of the region to the world.
Understanding the “Silicon Valley of Sarawak” allows guides to explain how the state is balancing its rich natural heritage with a future-forward economic approach.
The delegation was given a guided tour of the TDV facilities, which include co-working spaces, high-speed connectivity hubs, and prototyping laboratories.
These spaces are central to the state’s goal of becoming a digital powerhouse by 2030, a vision that the Sarawak government has prioritised to diversify the local economy.
By the end of the visit, members of the SkTGA expressed a renewed sense of confidence in their ability to articulate the state’s progress.
As Sarawak continues to attract global attention not just for its rainforests but for its smart city initiatives and digital infrastructure, the role of informed tourist guides becomes increasingly essential in marketing the state as a sophisticated global destination.
