In his address, he described the triathlon as more than just a race, but a strategic platform to elevate Sarawak’s profile in the global endurance sports arena.

Organised by Kelab Triatlon Kuching Selatan and powered by Grit Event Management, the Borneo 100 Triathlon is an internationally sanctioned event under the Malaysia Triathlon Association. This ensures that the competition complies with recognised national standards in race governance, safety, and structure.

Further reinforcing its credibility, the race will be professionally timed by official SEA Games timers, providing accurate and transparent results in line with international expectations. Categories offered include B100, Olympic Distance, Sprint, and Aquathlon, catering to both elite and amateur athletes.

Speaking at the event, Abdul Karim emphasised that endurance events such as triathlons are proven drivers of high-value tourism. Participants and supporters typically contribute to the local economy through spending on accommodation, food, transport, and other tourism-related services. He noted that Borneo 100 is well positioned to increase tourist arrivals, encourage longer stays, and generate higher visitor spending in Sarawak.

The choice of Sematan as the race venue offers a unique competitive environment. Athletes will experience open sea swimming, scenic coastal cycling, and a flat running route along the Pan Borneo Highway. The setting delivers an authentic “Edge of Borneo” challenge, aligning closely with Sarawak’s tourism pillars of Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food, and Festival.

Early response to the event has been encouraging. Participants have registered from across Malaysia as well as Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, China, Russia, and Italy. The organisers are targeting at least 20 per cent international participation, signalling strong potential for the event to develop into a recognised regional and global triathlon brand.

Importantly, the benefits extend directly to the local community in Sematan. Organisers estimate that more than 60 per cent of event-related expenditure will go to local businesses, including homestays, food vendors, and transport providers. This approach reflects a model of tourism development that is inclusive and community-driven.

Race Director Eric Tay said the vision behind Borneo 100 goes beyond organising a single event. He described it as a long-term effort to build a sustainable endurance sports ecosystem in Sarawak while positioning the state firmly on the international stage.

With improving accessibility and growing regional connectivity, Sarawak is poised to host more international-standard sporting events. The Borneo 100 Triathlon 2026 marks a significant milestone in that journey, reinforcing the state’s ambition to become a premier endurance sports destination in Southeast Asia.
