KUCHING – The academic landscape in Sarawak has reached a significant milestone, with the state recording its most impressive Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) performance in more than ten years.
This achievement was formally celebrated during the 2025 SPM Appreciation Ceremony, hosted in collaboration with Petronas at the Sarawak State Education Department auditorium.
The Sarawak Education Director, Omar bin Haji Mahli, highlighted the resilience of the 2025 cohort, describing them as a unique group that navigated their secondary education amidst the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notably, these students progressed through the system without the traditional milestones of the UPSR and PT3 public examinations. Rather than hindering their progress, these circumstances appeared to sharpen the resolve of the candidates, serving as a powerful catalyst for their academic success.
The collective efforts of the state’s education sector have culminated in a State Grade Point Average (GPN) of 4.79, a figure that represents the highest level of performance achieved by Sarawakian students in over a decade.
A standout statistic from this year’s results is the number of high achievers; a total of 853 candidates secured ‘All A’s’ across all their subjects.
This notable increase compared to previous years serves as a testament to the dedication of teachers, the commitment of the students, and the robust support system provided by parents and the broader community.
During the ceremony, the department paid tribute to institutions that demonstrated exceptional standards.
Recognition was given to schools that achieved a 100 per cent certificate eligibility rate, as well as those that maintained a consistent upward trajectory in their Grade Point Average (GPS) over a four-year period.
Furthermore, the event celebrated the inclusion and success of four special needs candidates, whose commendable results stood as a highlight of the day.
The event also focused on the future, offering a platform for graduates to learn about various higher education pathways.
Representatives, including the General Manager of Petronas Education Sponsorship, Ahmad Munir Akram Ahmad Faiz, were on hand to share details regarding the Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP), providing students with vital information to pursue tertiary studies.
Reflecting on the success, Omar bin Haji Mahli expressed his gratitude to all strategic partners, including Yayasan Sarawak, for their instrumental roles in supporting the candidates’ journeys.
He voiced his hope that this momentum of excellence would be sustained, ensuring that the next generation of Sarawakian students remains both knowledgeable and globally competitive.
