KOTA KINABALU – Concerns among Sepanggar residents over rice shortages in several chain supermarkets have prompted reassurance from the authorities that supplies remain sufficient across Sabah.
Mustapha Sakmud, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah & Sarawak), confirmed that rice stocks are adequate following detailed briefings from BERNAS Sabah and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. He also visited a rice storage warehouse to personally assess the situation.
Monitoring revealed that while larger supermarkets and chain outlets have experienced faster depletion of stocks due to panic buying, traditional markets and smaller grocery stores continue to maintain sufficient supplies.
The minister urged the public to avoid panic buying and instead purchase household essentials prudently. “Rice stock is sufficient for Kota Kinabalu and throughout Sabah. Panic buying only disrupts distribution and creates unnecessary concern,” he said.
He emphasised that the MADANI government remains committed to safeguarding national food security. Regular monitoring will be intensified through coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).
Officials noted that panic buying has become a recurring issue during periods of uncertainty, often driven by global challenges such as energy crises and supply chain disruptions. By maintaining steady monitoring and transparent communication, the government aims to reassure the public and prevent unnecessary strain on the market.
The minister highlighted that food security is a priority under the government’s agenda, with integrated measures being taken to ensure stability in supply chains. He reiterated that the well-being of the people remains central to policy decisions, even amid global uncertainties.
Residents are encouraged to remain calm and trust that the authorities are actively managing the situation. With sufficient rice stock confirmed, the government’s message is clear: buy according to need, not fear.
