67 Heads Appointed to Fisheries Network in Sibu Region II

SIBU – The Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department has officially appointed 67 Heads of Fisheries Networks (KJP) for Region II, covering Sarikei, Sibu, Tanjung Manis, Daro and Mukah, during a ceremony held at Premier Hotel, Sibu on 7 April 2026.

The event was officiated by YBrs. Encik Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Wahab, Senior Director of the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department, who underscored the strategic role of KJP leaders as vital links between the department and the fishing community.

He highlighted their responsibility in communicating policies, facilitating development, and acting as partners in strengthening Malaysia’s fisheries sector in line with the aspirations of MADANI Malaysia.

The appointments, valid from 2026 to 2029, reflect the trust placed in these leaders by their local communities.

Region II currently records 2,323 registered fishermen and 43 downstream fishery product operators, demonstrating the sector’s growth beyond traditional fishing into value-added activities.

The three-day strengthening programme accompanying the ceremony focused on enhancing the capacity of KJP leaders.

Sessions included briefings on fishermen’s issues by the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM), sea safety awareness by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), financing opportunities from Agrobank, and technical guidance from fisheries officers.

Participants were exposed to key topics such as resource management, conservation, legal compliance, and community economic development.

The programme aimed to equip KJP leaders with the knowledge and skills to act as effective frontliners in implementing government initiatives and ensuring sustainable fisheries practices.

In addressing current challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and economic pressures, the department urged KJP leaders to serve as proactive agents of change, committed to integrity and community welfare.

Officials reaffirmed their support through continuous training, technical assistance, and development programmes to maintain competitiveness and sustainability in the sector.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of appointment certificates and the recitation of a pledge, symbolising the leaders’ commitment to their new responsibilities.

Among those present were Lieutenant Colonel (M) Mohamad Syafiq Junid bin Abu Seman of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Mr. Raymond Rosidih from LKIM, Mr. Anuar bin Derahman of the Fisheries Development and Community Branch, and officers from the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department and Regional Fisheries Office II, Sibu.

The department expressed gratitude to educators, officers, and community leaders for their cooperation, noting that the success of the programme will inspire stronger collaboration and resilience within Sarawak’s fishing communities.
