LIMBANG – The Sarawak government is preparing to unveil a new assistance package aimed at easing the rising cost of living, with details expected to be announced next week.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg revealed that the initiative will be discussed at the upcoming State Cabinet meeting before being formally introduced.
He explained that the measure involves significant financial allocations, reflecting the state’s strong fiscal position.
“Next week, I will announce another aid for the people to deal with the cost of living. Based on the funds available today, I think we can implement it for the welfare of the people of Sarawak,” he said during a Leaders’ Dinner with Community Leaders and Tribal Leaders (KMKK) at the Limbang Lecture Hall.
The Premier also highlighted Sarawak’s progress in developing its hydrogen economy, noting that recent studies have shown hydrogen production costs are now lower than diesel prices. He attributed this to global geopolitical factors that have driven up the cost of conventional fuel.
“We have chosen the right energy to boost our economic development. With the price of diesel today, it seems that the cost of producing hydrogen is cheaper. This means that our vision to transform the economy through green technology and renewable resources is starting to show results,” he explained.
Hydrogen has been a cornerstone of Sarawak’s renewable energy strategy, with the state investing in infrastructure and research to position itself as a leader in clean energy. The Premier’s remarks suggest that these efforts are beginning to yield tangible economic benefits.
In addition to the cost of living aid, Abang Johari announced that allowances for community and tribal leaders will be reviewed and increased.
He emphasised that the adjustment recognises their crucial role in bridging communication between the government and the people, while ensuring efficient service delivery at the grassroots level.
“Due to our stable economic situation and strong funds, we are able to provide a good service and welfare to our tribal leaders and community leaders. I agree that this allowance should be studied and increased,” he added.
The event was attended by several senior figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, and Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail.
Their presence underscored the importance of the announcements for both economic policy and community development.
The forthcoming aid package, combined with Sarawak’s push towards renewable energy, reflects the state government’s dual focus on immediate welfare support and long-term economic transformation.
