MIRI – The Sarawak government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the interior with the announcement that the Miri-Baram road project is expected to be completed by 2029.
The initiative is seen as a major step towards opening up access to the Baram region, particularly Ulu Baram, and supporting long-term rural development.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, highlighted the significance of the project during his speech at the Miri Division Community Dinner held at the Pullman Waterfront Hotel.
He explained that the government has allocated nearly RM3 billion to ensure the road’s construction, describing it as a vital investment in the well-being of communities in the interior.
“I have promised to open up the Baram area, including the construction of the road from Miri to Baram up to Ulu Baram. Alhamdulillah, we have an allocation of more than RM2 billion, almost RM3 billion to implement this project,” he said.
Although the project may not generate immediate economic returns, the premier stressed that its value lies in improving connectivity, enabling access to essential services, and creating opportunities for future development.
The road is expected to transform the landscape of Baram by linking remote settlements with larger towns, thereby strengthening social and economic integration.
In addition to the new road, the Sarawak government has announced plans to take over existing logging roads in the region. Previously, these roads were restricted to certain parties and required permission or fees for use.
The premier stated that the government will upgrade the roads to meet safety standards and make them freely accessible to the public.
“The leaders of the Orang Ulu community stated that the use of logging roads previously required permission from the company and a certain fee. Therefore, the government has decided to take over the roads,” he explained.
He added that while maintenance will require continuous funding, the government is committed to ensuring the roads remain safe and functional for public use.
The Premier emphasised that the initiative forms part of a broader transformation strategy for Baram, aimed at uplifting rural communities and improving living standards.
By enhancing infrastructure, the government hopes to attract new opportunities in agriculture, tourism, and small-scale industries, while also ensuring residents benefit from better access to healthcare, education, and markets.
Observers note that the project reflects Sarawak’s wider vision of balanced development between urban and rural areas.
The construction of the Miri-Baram road is expected to serve as a catalyst for growth, helping to bridge gaps in accessibility and fostering greater inclusivity across the state.
As the project progresses, the government has pledged to continue engaging with local communities to ensure their needs are met.
The completion of the road in 2029 is anticipated to mark a turning point in Baram’s development, laying the foundation for a more connected and prosperous future.
