SIBU – A book chronicling the sacrifices and resilience of Sarawakians in their fight against colonial rule was officially launched at Tanahmas Hotel, Sibu, on Sunday.
The publication, titled Secebis Kisah Perjuangan Bangsa: Ikhlasnya Pengorbanan Indahnya Kemerdekaan, was written by the late Haji Hamdan Haji Marais, fondly remembered as Pak Den.
The launch was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Yusof, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.
In his speech, he emphasised the importance of preserving historical narratives, warning that neglecting history could lead to repeated mistakes.
“If we do not learn about history, it will not teach us a lesson. The mistakes of the past will be repeated, and we will not be able to move forward,” he said.
To ensure the book reaches a wider audience, Datuk Amar Fadillah announced funding for 5,000 copies to be distributed to schools across Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
The initiative aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the state’s independence struggle and inspire future generations to value patriotism and national identity.
The book, published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Sarawak Branch, captures the experiences of independence fighters and documents the journey of the Malay community in Sibu.
It traces resistance against James Brooke’s arrival, the role of leaders such as Petinggi Ali and Sharif Masahor, and the rise of political awareness through movements like the anti-cession campaign.
The sacrifices of figures including Rosli Dhoby and the Rukun 13 group are highlighted as symbols of courage and devotion to the homeland.
DBP Director General Hazami Jahari described the book as a continuation of Pak Den’s collaboration with the institution.
His earlier work, Masjid Al-Qadim Nadi Masyarakat Islam Sibu, published in 2022, documented the history of Malay villages in Sibu.
Hazami noted that Pak Den had hoped his writings would serve as a reminder of the importance of recording historical events for future generations.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development I Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, State Assemblyman for N.40 Daro Dr Safiee Ahmad, DBP Sarawak Director Dr Azizul Ismail, and Sibu Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
Family members of the late author, including his daughter Madina Hamdan, were also present, alongside corporate figure Tan Sri Bustari Yusuf and Datin Amar Ruziah Mohd Tahir, wife of the Deputy Prime Minister.
The publication is regarded as both a historical record and an emotional tribute to the sacrifices of Sarawak’s independence fighters.
It reflects the struggles of past generations while reminding readers that today’s peace and prosperity are built upon their dedication.
The book is expected to serve as a valuable reference for scholars, educators, and young Malaysians seeking to understand the roots of national identity and the enduring spirit of independence.
