KUCHING – Malaysia marked a significant step in its digital transformation journey with the launch of the Huawei AI Lab and Innovation Centre, an initiative aimed at positioning the country as a leader in artificial intelligence.
The centre was officially unveiled on 27 April 2026, symbolising Malaysia’s determination to move beyond being a consumer of technology and instead emerge as a creator and innovator.
The initiative reflects the government’s ambition to harness local talent and strengthen national capabilities in AI-driven development.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his remarks, emphasised that Malaysia must rise as “creators and direction-setters, with the courage to build our own strength and fully utilise the talents of local children”.
He noted that while the global race for AI sophistication is accelerating, progress must be guided by values to ensure that development benefits society as a whole.
The Prime Minister stressed that principles of justice, courtesy and social balance must remain central to Malaysia’s digital transformation.
He cautioned that technological advancement without values could undermine the true meaning of development.
The launch of the AI Lab is part of the MADANI government’s broader agenda to ensure inclusivity in digital progress.
Efforts will focus on bridging the gap between urban and rural communities, creating opportunities for local talent, and ensuring equitable access to technological benefits.
Malaysia also reaffirmed its openness to international cooperation in AI research and innovation.
However, the government highlighted that such partnerships must align with Malaysia’s own model, rooted in values and sovereignty, to secure a dignified future.
The Huawei AI Lab and Innovation Centre is expected to serve as a hub for research, training and collaboration, providing a platform for Malaysian innovators to develop AI solutions tailored to local needs.
Industry observers believe the centre will play a crucial role in strengthening Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
The initiative underscores Malaysia’s commitment to building a people-centred digital ecosystem, ensuring that technological progress contributes to national resilience, economic growth and social harmony.
