MIRI, April 28 — Police in Miri have intensified their efforts to maintain public safety through a large-scale integrated crime prevention operation conducted across the district late Monday night.
A total of 34 police personnel, including six senior officers and 28 rank-and-file members, were deployed in the operation led by the Miri District Police Headquarters. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by authorities to curb crime and enhance public confidence in local security.
Prior to the operation, a detailed briefing session was held at the Ruai Kenyalang Hall of the Miri IPD. The session was conducted by ASP Lee Yen Fang, Head of the District Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division. Officers were assigned specific duties covering roadblocks, snap checks, vehicle patrols, and inspections of entertainment outlets.
The operation officially began at 10.00 pm, with multiple roadblocks set up at key locations within the Miri administrative area. During these checks, officers identified various traffic violations among road users. A total of 23 summonses were issued for offences such as driving without a valid licence, illegal vehicle modifications, absence of side mirrors, modified exhaust systems, use of non-standard number plates, and expired road tax.
In a separate incident during the roadblock operation, a foreign woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. She has been taken in for further investigation in accordance with existing laws.
Police patrol units also conducted continuous snap checks and mobile patrols across residential areas, villages, and major roads. This omnipresence strategy aims to deter criminal activities while assuring the public that security enforcement remains active and visible throughout the district.
In addition, inspections were carried out at several entertainment centres as part of the integrated operation. Authorities conducted urine screenings on individuals present at the premises. Results showed that three individuals tested positive for drug use, and they have since been detained for further action.
The Miri District Police stated that such operations will continue periodically as part of a broader strategy to combat crime and maintain order. The presence of police personnel in public areas is expected to further strengthen safety measures and reassure the community.
