MIRI – Police in Miri have launched a special operation to dismantle online gambling activities, focusing on remote areas under the district’s jurisdiction.
The operation, carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the Miri District Police Headquarters, ran from 27 to 30 April 2026.
Authorities explained that the syndicates involved in online gambling often operate from secluded premises, making it difficult for enforcement teams to approach without being detected.
The operation required careful planning and execution to ensure that raids could be conducted effectively despite the geographical challenges.
Over the course of the operation, police conducted eight raids across three different areas. Three raids took place in Batu Niah, three in Bekenu, and two in Lambir.
The targeted premises included small business outlets and unnumbered huts in rural locations, which had been identified as centres for online gambling activities.
As part of enforcement measures, six premises linked to gambling operations were disconnected from electricity supply during the operation period.
This step was taken to disrupt ongoing activities and prevent further use of the facilities for illegal purposes.
Police confirmed that eight suspects were arrested during the raids. Seven of them were women aged between 20 and 35, while one was a 31-year-old man believed to be the caretaker of the gambling premises and huts. Officers also seized equipment and materials used to facilitate online gambling.
All suspects were remanded for two days to assist with investigations. Authorities stated that charges will be filed at the Subis Circuit Court in the near future.
The arrests mark a significant step in curbing gambling syndicates that exploit remote areas to evade detection.
The operation reflects the ongoing commitment of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to combat illegal gambling across Sarawak.
By targeting rural and hard-to-reach locations, enforcement agencies aim to dismantle networks that undermine public order and exploit vulnerable communities.
Police reiterated their determination to continue monitoring and raiding gambling premises, stressing that such activities will not be tolerated.
The public has been urged to support enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities to local authorities.
