KUCHING — A 19-year-old man believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a cyclist on Jalan Stutong has surrendered to the police, bringing a significant development to the case that had drawn public concern over the past few days.
Kuching District Police Chief Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the suspect presented himself at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Kuching District Police Headquarters at approximately 12.00 noon. The surrender came several days after the tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 1.
According to police reports, the accident took place at around 5.50am and involved a bicycle and a car. The collision resulted in the death of the cyclist at the scene. The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled without reporting the incident, sparking outrage among the public and calls for accountability.
Following his surrender, the suspect was immediately detained by the authorities under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless or dangerous driving causing death. Police investigations proceeded swiftly, with the suspect cooperating by leading officers back to the scene of the accident and later to a workshop located in Batu 4.
At the workshop, police discovered a Proton Satria believed to have been involved in the fatal collision. The vehicle has since been seized for further forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities also conducted a urine test on the suspect, which returned negative for any drug-related substances. This finding forms part of the standard procedure in such serious traffic cases.
The police have confirmed that the suspect is expected to be charged in court under Section 41(1) for causing death by reckless driving. In addition, he will face charges under Section 52(2) of the same act for failing to lodge a police report within 24 hours after the accident.
In his statement, Alexson expressed appreciation to members of the public who came forward with information that assisted the police in tracking down the suspect. Their cooperation played a crucial role in advancing the investigation.
This case serves as a strong reminder to all road users about the importance of responsibility and adherence to traffic laws. Fleeing the scene of an accident not only worsens the situation but also carries serious legal consequences.
