Betong Police Arrest Suspect in Drug Possession Case

BETONG – Police in Betong have detained a 27-year-old man following a narcotics operation carried out by the district’s Criminal Investigation Section on 6 May 2026.

The arrest took place at approximately 12.10 pm in the Betong area, where the suspect was allegedly found in possession of drugs and believed to have been involved in previous drug-related activities.

The individual was taken to the Betong District Police Headquarters for further investigation. A urine screening conducted by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system. Authorities also revealed that the suspect has a prior record linked to drug offences.

Police confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM100,000 fine or up to five years’ imprisonment if convicted.

In addition, the suspect faces charges under Section 15 of the same Act, which stipulates a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years upon conviction.

Betong District Police Chief DSP Wan Mohamad Au bin Wan Malek emphasised that the police take drug-related offences seriously and will not compromise on matters that threaten community safety.

He urged residents to assist law enforcement by reporting any suspicious drug activities in their neighbourhoods.

“The Betong IPD police take a serious view of drug offences among the community and do not compromise with such problems. We appeal to society to transmit information to the police regarding drug activities in the area,” he stated.
