KUCHING – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, received a courtesy visit from the newly appointed Sarawak Mufti, Sahibus Samahah Datu Haji Khalidi bin Haji Ibrahim, at his office on Friday, 8 May 2026.
Datu Haji Khalidi assumed the role of Sarawak Mufti on 1 March 2026, following the conclusion of Datu Kipli Yassin’s tenure on 28 February.
Datu Kipli had served for more than ten years, overseeing the state’s religious institution during a period of significant growth and development.
The appointment of Datu Haji Khalidi is regarded as a continuation of efforts to strengthen the fatwa institution in Sarawak, ensuring it remains authoritative, relevant, and responsive to contemporary challenges.
His leadership is expected to reinforce the institution’s role in guiding the Muslim community while adapting to evolving social and cultural contexts.
Prior to his appointment, Datu Haji Khalidi served as a reference specialist in the Sarawak Mufti Department. In that capacity, he contributed extensively to fatwa-related matters and the administration of the institution, gaining valuable experience that now informs his new responsibilities.
The courtesy call provided an opportunity to reaffirm collaboration between the state’s religious authorities and government leadership.
Both parties emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation in advancing the development of the ummah and promoting the well-being of Sarawak’s diverse communities.
The meeting also highlighted the broader significance of religious leadership in fostering social harmony and civic responsibility.
By strengthening ties between government and religious institutions, the state aims to ensure that policies and guidance remain aligned with the needs of the people.
Also present during the visit was Ustaz Khalipah bin Juli, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Mufti Department, who underscored the department’s commitment to supporting the Mufti’s vision and enhancing community engagement.
Observers note that the transition in leadership reflects Sarawak’s ongoing dedication to nurturing religious institutions that are both rooted in tradition and responsive to modern realities.
The Premier’s reception of the new mufti symbolises the state’s recognition of the vital role played by religious authorities in shaping values, strengthening community resilience, and guiding moral development.
As Sarawak continues to balance progress with cultural and spiritual identity, the appointment of Datu Haji Khalidi is seen as a step towards consolidating the state’s religious framework while ensuring inclusivity and relevance for future generations.
