MARUDI – A search and rescue operation was launched in Marudi on 8 May 2026 after a missing person case was reported by police, believed to be linked to a crocodile attack at Sungai Ridan.
The Marudi District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received the emergency call at 8.54am, following initial reports from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA).
Investigations revealed that the incident occurred on 7 May at around 4.00pm, when the victim was said to have been fishing along the river.
The Civil Defence Force (APM) mobilised its Search and Rescue (SAR) team, working in collaboration with PDRM and BOMBA. The operation began at 9.14am, covering a two-kilometre stretch from the location of the incident.
Tragically, at 10.52am, parts of the victim’s body were discovered, including the left hand, left leg, and head.
Later, at 12.14pm, the victim’s right foot was found three kilometres downstream. The remains were subsequently transported to hospital by police for further procedures.
The SAR team concluded its mission in the early afternoon, returning safely to PKOD Marudi. Authorities confirmed that the operation was conducted in a controlled manner, with all agencies working closely to ensure the recovery process was handled with care and respect.
Crocodile-related incidents remain a serious concern in Sarawak’s riverine communities, where fishing and daily activities often bring residents into close proximity with wildlife.
Local authorities continue to urge caution when near rivers known to be crocodile habitats, stressing the importance of reporting emergencies immediately through the national hotline 999.
APM reiterated its guiding principle of “Ready, Fast, With Integrity”, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding communities and responding swiftly to emergencies.
The incident at Sungai Ridan serves as a reminder of the risks posed by natural environments and the importance of coordinated response efforts in ensuring public safety.
