KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) responded promptly to a reported sinkhole at Jalan Stampin Tengah on Saturday evening, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and efficient service delivery.
At around 6.30 pm on 9 May, MBKS was alerted by a member of the public about the hazard. Council staff immediately implemented temporary safety measures at the site, including the placement of warning tapes and a traffic cone, to ensure road users were aware of the danger and to prevent accidents.
According to MBKS, rectification works will commence on Monday, with the affected section of the road scheduled for repair to restore safe passage for motorists.
The Council emphasised that such swift action reflects its dedication to maintaining infrastructure and protecting the community.
Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng, expressed appreciation to the individual who reported the incident.
He noted that timely information from residents plays a crucial role in enabling the council to act quickly on issues that affect public safety and well-being.
“Public cooperation and timely information shared by the community are important in helping MBKS respond quickly to issues affecting public safety and well-being. Such cooperation reflects the caring spirit of the people of Kuching South,” he said.
Dato Wee further highlighted MBKS’s ongoing commitment to ensuring Kuching remains a safe, clean, and well-managed city.
He explained that continuous monitoring, rapid responses, and close collaboration with the community are central to the council’s approach.
Sinkholes, though not uncommon in urban areas, can pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians if left unattended.
Infrastructure experts note that such occurrences are often linked to soil erosion, underground water movement, or weakened road foundations.
MBKS’s immediate intervention prevented potential accidents and reassured the public of the council’s vigilance. The Council has consistently prioritised proactive measures in addressing urban challenges.
Recent initiatives include enhanced road inspections, improved drainage maintenance, and community awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to reduce risks while strengthening public confidence in the city’s management.
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting hazards or irregularities to MBKS, as community involvement remains vital in sustaining safety standards.
The Council’s swift response to the Jalan Stampin Tengah sinkhole demonstrates how effective cooperation between authorities and the public can safeguard lives and maintain the city’s infrastructure.
