BETONG – Police in Betong have detained two men following a special operation targeting drug-related activities in the district.
The arrests were carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Betong District Police Headquarters on 11 May at around 11.40 am.
The suspects, aged 29 and 48, were taken into custody after being found in possession of drugs. Both men were transported to the Betong police headquarters for further investigation. Subsequent urine tests revealed positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Authorities confirmed that both individuals have prior records linked to drug offences. Their latest arrests are being investigated under Section 12(2) and Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted under Section 12(2), offenders may face a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years. Meanwhile, Section 15 carries penalties of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years.
Betong District Police Chief DSP Wan Mohamad Au bin Wan Malek stressed that drug offences are taken seriously and that enforcement will remain uncompromising.
He urged the community to play an active role in reporting suspicious activities, highlighting that public cooperation is vital in curbing the spread of narcotics.
Drug abuse continues to be a pressing concern across Sarawak, with police forces conducting regular operations to dismantle networks and reduce the availability of illicit substances.
Nationally, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has reinforced its stance that community vigilance is essential in tackling the problem.
