KUCHING – The Director of the Other Religions Affairs Unit (UNIFOR), YBhg. Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau, led a field visit to the site of the Worship and Community Centre for Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Kuching on Thursday, 21 May 2026.
The visit was part of UNIFOR’s ongoing commitment to monitor and ensure the transparent implementation of government-funded projects.
The inspection, which began at 8.30 am, was joined by officers from UNIFOR’s Monitoring and Compliance Division (BPP).
The team reviewed the progress of the development project, which aims to provide a modern worship and community facility for BEM members in Kuching.
Dato Georgina emphasised that UNIFOR’s role extends beyond administrative oversight, highlighting the importance of ensuring that every allocation from the Sarawak Government is utilised systematically and delivers tangible benefits to the local community.
She noted that the on-site approach allows UNIFOR to directly assess challenges and ensure projects remain on track.
The visit was also attended by senior UNIFOR officials, including Mrs. Low Suk Fong, Principal Assistant Director of BPP; Mr. Roma Joe, Assistant Director of BKP; Mr. George Yeong, Assistant Director of BPP; and Mr. Mark, Administrative Assistant of BPP.
Their presence underscored the collaborative effort within UNIFOR to maintain accountability and efficiency in project execution.
Representatives from BEM Sarawak were also present, including Rev. Bina Agong, President; Elder Stanley Sigar, Field Secretary; Mr. Mat Amat, Treasurer; and Rev. John Para, Chairman of BEM Kuching District.
They welcomed the visit as a sign of the government’s support for religious and community development initiatives.
The Worship and Community Centre project is expected to serve as a hub for both spiritual activities and community engagement.
Once completed, it will provide facilities for worship, gatherings, and outreach programmes, strengthening BEM’s role in fostering unity and social support within Kuching.
Community leaders have expressed optimism that the centre will enhance inclusivity and provide a safe space for residents to participate in religious and social activities.
The project reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of supporting diverse faith communities while promoting harmony and development across the state.
UNIFOR reiterated its commitment to continue monitoring similar projects to ensure that government funding is channelled responsibly and effectively.
The visit to the BEM Kuching site demonstrated the department’s proactive approach in safeguarding transparency and reinforcing the government’s dedication to improving the quality of life for Sarawakians.
